Saskatchewan will not have you smoking weed in public, thank you very much!
The provincial government in Saskatchewan announced the ticketing system and harsh fines for those caught smoking cannabis in public.
If you plan on smoking cannabis in Saskatchewan you better familiarize yourself with the zoning laws and bylaws in the province, because getting caught smoking in the wrong place might cost you dearly.
The fines are ranging from $200 to well over $2,000, depending on the charge which is being prosecuted.
The lowest possible ticket of $200 is reserved for those that are caught with amounts of cannabis over 30g in a public place, consuming it in public or in a campground when it’s prohibited.
A five times bigger fine ($1000) will be waiting for those that decide to smoke on school grounds, or at a child-care facility.
The largest fine, which is $2000 to $2250 will be given to retailers that fail to ask proof of age from his buyers or a permit-holder who sells or distributes to a minor.
Where will cannabis be sold in Sask?
Cannabis will be rather widely available in Saskatchewan as both online and brick-and-mortar sales will be fueling its market.
Saskatchewan has opted in a private model which means that the provincial government will only oversee the market, but it is not likely that they will have stores at all.
The Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA) will be controlling the distribution as well as the wholesale, but aside from they won’t have a retail presence.
An interesting story spilled out a couple weeks ago as a 23-year old Saskatoon University recent-graduate got awarded one of only seven retail licenses for the whole city.
She was competing against the likes of big-money investors and even Canopy Growth, which was awarded 5 of the 51 retail locations in the province.
First Nation communities will also have a presence in the province as Sakimay First Nation has four properties in urban centers, two in two Regina and two in Yorkton.
A total of three Indigenous communities in Saskatchewan have been approved to apply for a license to sell marijuana.
