The Vegas Show: MJBizCon Hosts Big, Legal Cannabis Industry (photos)

LAS VEGAS–The legal cannabis industry invaded Las Vegas this week when the largest U.S. cannabis trade show MJBizCon was held at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Exhibitors from every industry sector and all over the globe filled the center’s Main Hall.

Thousands of attendees stood in line on the show’s first morning, eager to see what the industry has to offer, network with various vendors, and make deals where and when they were able. A handy show app could be downloaded and allowed QR code scanning for easy information exchange, as well as schedule updates. The show saw an internationally diverse crowd, with many Canadian cannabis companies either browsing or hosting booths.

mgretailer was among 227 global, national, and local media outlets in attendance, according to a count issued by MJBizCon.

In the front row, in front of an entrance, iconic lighter brand BIC Lighters was a familiar, mainstream brand doing smart business in peak position. According to show info, 1,027 exhibitors meant a floor dense with booths, from mega-sized enclosures that encompassed the size of whole dispensaries (several hosted …

Marijuana is Legal! And with legality comes great responsibility.

AS  you’ve likely realized, marijuana is legal! (For most Americans, at least.) California is beginning to settle into its first set of regulations, and an adult-use Michigan is looking like a sure thing. So, now what?

Now, I’d argue, it’s time to rewrite the rules of engagement surrounding cannabis use.
With legal weed comes infinitely more knowledge, and with that knowledge comes tremendous responsibility—and it’s a responsibility we all share, a mutual respect we owe to one another as we enjoy infused meals together and Pepsi-challenge each other’s vaporizers.

Before these regulated marketplaces gave us a retail infrastructure, multiple levels of consumer protection, and more substantive information about the cannabis we’re consuming, we rarely knew exactly what we were ingesting. While a select few grew their own, tracking all the nutrients and pesticides used in the cultivation process, most of us “got it from a guy”—a scenario I relived recently while strolling Pusher Street, Christiania’s world-famous hash market in the middle of Copenhagen, Denmark.

With the help of a Danish-speaking friend in September, I asked one of the nameless guys

Crackdown on CBD Oil Coming to Ohio

COLUMBUS, Ohio- Officials in Ohio are cracking down on CBD oil sales.

Although CBD products have been sold in stores throughout the state for several years, the Ohio Board of Pharmacy has now decided that these sales are illegal for most businesses. Now, only state-approved cannabis dispensaries will be able to sell CBD oil.

While medicinal cannabis has been legalized in Ohio, there are no shops currently operating. For patients in need, they could be caught between a rock and a hard place as they wait for dispensaries to open.

Businesses accustomed to offering customers these products are now trying to liquidate their inventory. The sign on the counter of Smokers Plus, a Dayton shop that sells glass pipes, vaporizers, tobacco products, and CBD oil, reads “Final sales – all CBD now 10 percent off,” according to WHIO TV.

Rabi Ahmad, the owner of Smokers Plus, feels that he may lose business because of the board’s decision.

“I think this is a leading product. Within one or two years, this product has become so popular,” he said.

Embracing the Next Generation of Cannabis Business Events

Standing in my Denver office in early June, it all seemed so very far away. In the weeks that followed, I would be heading northeast to Toronto, and then farther east to Saint John, New Brunswick, and then waaaaay southwest to Mendocino County, California—all for cannabis business gatherings of different stripes.

One of the events, O’Cannabiz in Toronto, was a straight-up business expo, and I moderated a compelling panel on the future of adult-use marijuana with the biggest cannabis brands in the world on stage alongside me. Another event, the World Cannabis Congress in Saint John, was a modified take on the conference format, with invite-only “delegates” instead of attendees, no expo floor, and curated panels. Mine was on the role of the media in a 420-legal society. And the third, Meadowlands, was something of an anti-conference—a scheduled, if informal, camp-out focused on California’s post-implementation cannabis supply chain in the stunning Mendo woods three hours north of San Francisco.

More than 3,500 miles separated Saint John and Mendocino, but truly, some of these events were closer philosophically than many of …
